Your best source for mountain conditions

Driving up Mt Hutt is all part of the adventure. Wind your way from the plains to the peaks, with epic views. Just make sure you’re prepped – check the snow report, carry snow chains, and know how to fit them (yep, even if it’s bluebird).
Mt Hutt is situated 26km (approximately half an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions) from Methven and 113 km (90 minutes) from Christchurch. The unsealed access road is 14km to the base area which sits at 1,597m elevation, overlooking the Canterbury Plains.
Remember to carpool when possible, always bring snow chains and check the weather report before heading up the access road.

On bluebird days, pow days and through the holidays, the road gets busy and car parks fill fast. It happens here, and at ski fields across NZ. With half our parking 3km from base, shuttle queues can build.
Carpool Priority Days – how it works:
Want priority? Park at the carpark 5 (info booth), fill your car (ride-share), then proceed through to inspection at carpark 3. Ride-share is also possible from car park 3 (Rakaia Saddle) or carpark 4 (Zed Creek). Note: shuttles don’t run to the carpark 5 (Info booth).
We’ll signal Carpool Priority Days 48 hours in advance on our website.
We have free car parking and a drop-off zone right outside our base facilities at the bottom of the lifts. When the top car parks (carpark 1 & 2) are full, our friendly team will direct you into one of our overflow car parks, which are serviced regularly by a free ski shuttle service.
Please note that this shuttle service is only provided on days where our overflow car parks are operating, only providing a service between our overflow car parks and our base area.

If you’re driving your own vehicle up the access road, we require that snow chains are always carried in the event of inclement weather. If you don’t have snow chains for your vehicle on days these are required, you can also hire these from the bottom of our access road. Snow chain hire is also provided by an external provider, Alpine Sports. They offer a hire service only, so you must be able to fit your own chains to your vehicle.

TOP TIP: Check the Snow Report before heading up for the latest on road and carpark conditions.

Yes. Our drop-off zone is a designated area for you to get your gear right to the top before parking your vehicle. Simply let our car park crew know you’re planning to swing by the drop-off area and we’ll direct you the right way.
There are two sites for fitting chains. Lower access road (chain bay 1) info booth or half way point at (chain bay 2) Canterbury view. This will be indicated on our website weather page. Please check here before heading up.
All vehicles are permitted to access Mt Hutt and is not limited to 4WD vehicles only. However, depending on your vehicle, you may need to fit snow chains, and there can be restrictions on high-sided vehicles such as campervans during inclement weather. Note that 4WD vehicles may be required to fit chains anytime during the season.
If you’re travelling in a rental vehicle, we recommend checking with your rental company before your visit, as driving on alpine roads or using snow chains is not always covered.
For the latest road conditions and updates, check the Snow Report, which is updated daily by 6:30am.
To find out about daily updates on the road conditions, car park availability and whether snow chains are required, check out the Snow Report on our website.
