Flying into Christchurch? You’re closer to the slopes than you think. Canterbury’s ski fields are some of the most accessible in New Zealand, with Mt Hutt around a 90 minute drive from Christchurch International Airport.

With 365 hectares of skiable terrain and a 683m vertical drop, Mt Hutt scores consistent snow and some of the country’s most spectacular views. About 90 minutes up the road from Christchurch, Porters is a solid day-trip option with a mix of cruisy groomers and steeps for those chasing a bit more bite. With 285 hectares of skiable terrain, Porters is a little smaller than Mt Hutt, but big on character and a great day trip option.

A bit further south but well worth the drive. Ōhau serves up big alpine views across Lake Ōhau and terrain that’s hard not to love. Quiet slopes, proper Southern Alps scenery and a laid-back lodge vibe make this an iconic mountain. Perfect to fit into a South Island winter road trip.

Home to some of the best views in the Mackenzie Country. Roundhill is known for its learner & family friendly slopes but is also popular with international ski race teams. For those keen to push a little higher, jump on the Heritage Express, the world’s longest and steepest rope tow. See what Australasia’s biggest vertical drop (783m) is all about.
Tucked between Fairlie and Tekapo with wide open uncrowded runs and a friendly kiwi atmosphere. Mt Dobson offers well groomed beginners slopes to challenging black runs with miles of untracked powder and kiwi hospitality.

Tucked in the Craigieburn Range, Mt Cheeseman is a relaxed, family-friendly club field with wide basins and natural terrain. With two T-bar lifts, a learners’ tow, and 320 metres of vertical drop. The ski area sits within an alpine basin with terrain that varies from mellow to steep, and there are generally also some park features to explore.

One of New Zealand’s oldest club ski areas, Temple Basin is a proper high-country adventure. Two lodges with 120 bunks sit right by the lifts, making it a true ski-in, ski-out experience. Your bags and gear go up by goods lift from State Highway 73, while you tackle the 50 minute walk up the track. At the top, three rope tows give access to beginner through to advanced terrain spread across multiple basins.

Methven is the closest town to Mt Hutt and the ultimate base for a Canterbury ski trip. Just 35 minutes from the mountain, it offers easy access to first lifts and a relaxed alpine village atmosphere. Christchurch is around 1 hour 30 minutes from Mt Hutt and serves as the main gateway for travellers flying into the region. It offers a large selection of hotels and city-based accommodation, making it a convenient option for shorter trips or those combining skiing with wider South Island travel.

The Canterbury ski season typically runs from June to October, depending on snowfall and weather conditions. July and August offer peak winter conditions, while September often delivers bluebird days and soft spring snow.
