Top tips for your first day

A little prep goes a long way up here. Here’s how to plan ahead, skip the faff, and make the most of your day on the mountain.
getting to Mt Hutt

1 - plan your arrival

Whether you’re driving up, hopping on a shuttle, or sorting a ride for the crew there’s more than one way to get to the top. Here’s the lowdown on how to make your way to Hutt.

  • Christchurch & Rolleston Bus - Skip the early wake-up and the drive. A return ticket with Snowman Shuttles gets you to the mountain by 9am. Departs 7am from Christchurch or 7:30am from Rolleston.
  • Methven to Mt Hutt Ski Bus - Staying local? Methven Travel runs daily buses straight from town to the slopes. No chains, no parking stress – just book ahead and roll up.
  • Driving to Mt Hutt - A little planning helps, expect drive times from 45 minutes from Methven to 120 minutes from Christchurch. The final 14km is an unsealed alpine road - always bring snow chains, check the Snow Report before leaving, and carpool when you can.
  • Carpool Priority Days - Bluebird day? Long weekend? We prioritise carpoolers to help ease the pressure on our lower car parks and keep those shuttle waits down. Good for you, good for the mountain.

Check out our Getting Here Guide for more helpful tips & tricks to make it up our maunga

TOP TIP: Check the road and carpark conditions on the Snow Report before leaving and again when you get to the start of the Mt Hutt Access road. Updated daily from 6:30am.

carparks & Shuttles

Mt Hutt parking tips
We have free car parking and a drop-off zone right outside our base facilities at the bottom of the lifts. When the top car park is full, our friendly team will direct you into one of our overflow car parks, which are serviced regularly by a free ski shuttle service.

Please note that this shuttle service is only provided on Carpool Priority Days and days where our overflow car parks are operating, only providing a service between our overflow car parks and our base area.

Plan Your Day

Beginner Runs
If it’s your first time skiing or snowboarding, start in the beginner zones, which have gentle slopes and surface conveyor lifts.

Once you're comfortable, try progressing to green trails like Highway 72, from the Nor’West Express chairlift. If you've taken a lesson (highly recommended) ask your instructor for suggestions on where to go next!

5 - know the snow Responsibility code

Stay safe & have fun

When skiing or snowboarding at Mt Hutt, it’s important to understand and follow the Snow Responsibility Code to ensure both your own and others’ safety on the mountain.

Limit your speed in busy areas.
Match your speed to surrounding skiers and riders and be prepared for others to make sudden changes in direction or speed.

Stay 5m from others - If less than 5m from others you must slow down. The faster you go the more space you must give others.

Give way to those downhill and look before you leap.
Snowboarders: take care turning onto your heel edge.

Only stop where you can be seen from above and always look uphill before moving again. Only stop on the edge of trails or beside fixed objects.

What to wear

your first-timer fit check

The right gear makes all the difference between a good day and a great one. Whether you’re here for your very first lesson or just tagging along for the snowball fights, here’s how to layer up & gear up.

Waterproof outerwear
Rentals Available
A snow jacket and pants are a must. These keep out moisture and wind, even if you fall over (which happens to everyone!). Regular rain jackets or jeans won’t cut it – they’ll soak through quickly.
Base layers (thermals)
Must bring or purchase
These are your next-to-skin layers that trap warmth. Merino or synthetic materials are best. Avoid cotton – it holds moisture and will make you cold.
mid-layer optional
Must bring or purchase
A fleece or light puffer for extra warmth between your thermals and jacket.
helmets
Rentals Available
Safety first. Helmets are included in all gear rental packages and are way warmer than you’d expect!
goGgles or sunglasses
Must bring or purchase
Goggles are best for visibility in snow or wind, but sunglasses can work on bluebird days. Cheap goggles often fog up, so bringing along a decent pair is worth it.
gloves & Socks
Must bring or purchase
Waterproof and insulated. Mittens are often warmer for beginners. Just one pair of warm, breathable socks – preferably ski-specific. Avoid layering socks (they bunch and cause blisters), and steer clear of cotton.

Not skiing? Need a break?

There is so much more!

There’s plenty happening off the slopes too. Think snow play, epic views, and coffee stops worth the trip alone. Whether the skis are staying in the rack or you’re catching your breath between laps, there’s always something up here to keep the stoke high.

Six tips for chairlift loading for kids

Wait your turn

  • Line up in the lift queue and wait your turn before sliding forward to the chair loading zone.

Load with an experienced adult

  1. If you are over 120cm tall you can ride the lift by yourself.
  2. If you are under 120cm you must ride the lift with an adult
  3. If you are riding the chairlift with a friend, get your adult to sit between you both to help you on and off.
  4. Only you and one friend can ride with one adult, if you have lots of friends in your group, other adults will be asked to help.

Sit back-to-back

  • Sit all the way to the back of the chairlift so your back is touching the back rest.

Put the safety bar down

  • If you are tall enough you can pull the safety bar down, but if you can’t reach it let the adult put it down for you.

Sit still and hold on

  • Once you are on the chair and the safety bar is down, sit still and hold on until you are up the top of the mountain.

Let the adult raise the bar and tell you when to slide off

  • When you reach the top of the mountain, don’t rush to get off. Wait until you can touch the ground then slide off and enjoy your day.
How do instructors keep lessons safe?

Our Snowsports team is made up of certified professionals with top-tier training. Every lesson is structured to match your ability, comfort level, and conditions on the day. We start with clear safety briefings, keep group sizes manageable, and focus on steady progression - from first balance to first carve.

You'll also learn the Snow Responsibility Code along the way, so you're not just riding better, but riding with awareness of others on the mountain.

Safety Tips for First Time Skiers and Snowboarders

Safety is at the heart of every first turn at Mt Hutt. Our beginner zones are carefully designed with gentle slopes, soft fall lines, and dedicated Conveyor Carpets to make learning smooth and secure. You'll always find our expert instructors nearby — trained to guide, encourage, and make sure everyone’s building confidence at their own pace.

  • Start on the Surface Convayor Lifts – Beginner terrain is where confidence is built.
  • Look ahead – Keep your eyes up and focus on where you want to go.
  • Follow mountain signs – Obey all posted signs and listen to ski patrol.
  • Take regular breaks – Tired legs increase your risk of falling.
  • Move aside after a fall – Clear the trail before getting up.
  • Dress in layers – Stay warm, dry, and ready for changing weather.
  • Wear a helmet – Protect your head with proper snow sports gear.

Tip: Helmets are recommended for all riders and are included in all rental packages. Layer up, wear gloves, and follow the signs, they’re there to help you ride smart.

What time does the mountain open?

Our lifts are open daily from 9am – 4pm, subject to weather conditions.

Our on-mountain Guest Services and Rentals aim to open from 8am daily, so you’ve got time to get sorted before heading out.

First Tracks: 8am – 9am on Saturday & Sunday from July.

When is the ski season?

The season kicks off in June and runs through early October. July school holidays bring the busiest crowds, so plan ahead and book early to lock in the magic.
