Why Mt Hutt is Perfect for Family Ski Holidays

Family Ski Holidays at Mt Hutt

Mt Hutt is a pretty special spot for a whānau ski trip. With a friendly beginner area, dedicated kids’ lessons and a few fun snow activities along the way, it’s a place where first turns often become lifelong winter memories.

Just 90 minutes from Christchurch or 45 minutes from Methven, you can be leaving the city in the morning and building snowmen before lunch.

And here’s a good one for the parents - kids 5 and under ski for free.

Kids 5 & Under Ski Free

If your little one is five or younger, they score a free lift pass at Mt Hutt. Yep, free. They’re also eligible for a free Season Pass.

Simply swing by Guest Services with proof of age and the team will sort their lift ticket. Easy as.

A Beginner Area Made for Kids

Learning to ski should feel fun, not daunting. Our beginner area keeps things nice and simple.

Two magic carpets mean no hiking up hills or wrangling rope tows. The slope has a gentle gradient with a flat run-out at the bottom, giving kids plenty of space to find their balance and practise stopping.

It’s also close to the café and toilets, which makes those hot chocolate breaks nice and easy.

Once they’ve mastered the first carpet, there’s another nearby with a bit more pitch. Perfect for building confidence before hopping on their first chairlift.

Ski & Snowboard Lessons for Young Riders

The Mt Hutt Snow School is packed with friendly instructors who know how to keep kids smiling while they learn.

Group lessons are available for:

  • Skiers aged 4+
  • Snowboarders aged 7+

For younger kids or those wanting extra attention, private lessons can also be arranged.

If it’s your family’s first time on snow, the First Timer or Intro to Snow packages are a great place to start. They bundle together lift passes, lessons and equipment hire, which makes getting organised a whole lot easier.

A Mountain the Whole Whānau Can Enjoy

Once the kids are up and sliding, Mt Hutt opens up quickly. Wide beginner runs, cruisy groomers and plenty of space to explore mean everyone can find their rhythm.

And when the legs need a rest? Ōpuke Kai café is right there for a warm drink and a bite before heading back out for a few more laps.

Not a bad way to spend a winter day.
