Mt Hutt Base Building Expansion

Big things are coming to Mt Hutt for winter 2027

We’re investing $12 million into a major expansion of the Mt Hutt base area over summer 2026/27, creating more space, more seating and an even better experience on the mountain for winter 2027.

The project will see our outdoor sun deck almost triple in size, growing from 430sqm to around 1,300sqm. Better yet, the entire deck will be heated, creating plenty more space to grab a seat, refuel and soak up the mountain views between laps.

More space where it matters

Alongside the expanded sun deck, the project will deliver:

  • A new ground-floor toilet block
  • Improved heated access steps to snow level
  • An additional café and food and beverage outlet
  • Extra storage space for guests and staff

Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie says the expansion is all about creating more room and improving how the base area works as the mountain continues to grow.

“We have a great base lodge that works really well for us operationally, but we’re now at the point where adding more space and seating will make a real difference, particularly on those bluebird days after new snow when everyone wants to be up the mountain,” James says.

“It also gives us the opportunity to introduce an exciting new food and beverage outlet. We’ll have more to share about that over the summer.”

Investing in the future of Mt Hutt

Mt Hutt has continued to grow steadily over the years, and the expansion is the next step in making sure our facilities keep pace with the number of people choosing to spend their winters with us.

“Mt Hutt has become gradually and consistently busier over time. We’re now matching our investment in the base facilities to accommodate that growth,” James says. “We’re also creating a foundation that will allow us to continue to grow sustainably in line with future demand.”

Ashburton-based Bradfords Building has been appointed as the principal contractor, with construction getting underway following the 2026 winter season.

The new-look base area is scheduled to be ready for the start of winter 2027.

We’ll be sharing more updates from the project - including details on the new food and beverage offering over the summer.
