Family Guide to Skiing Mt Hutt
We know wrangling the crew for a family snow trip can feel like a lot. But up here at Mt Hutt, we keep things simple. Just over a 90-minute drive from Christchurch, our maunga is made for memory-making, belly laughs, and big snowy grins.
From first slides to full-send teens, there’s something for every age and stage. With smooth, easy beginner zones, friendly faces, and a learn-to-ski setup that actually works – you’re in for a win.
Need a breather? We’ve got warm kai, great coffee and a front-row seat to the snow action at our cafe, Ōpuke Kai. Sorted.
Here are our go-to tips for a cracker day on the snow with the whānau:
Plan Ahead
Night-before hustle
Pack the night before. Lay out the gear, boots to beanies, in the order the kids chuck it on. This means less morning mayhem, and more time for that flat white before shredding. And hey, better to find the missing glove now than halfway up the access road.
Check the Snow Report
Our daily Snow Report drops from 6.30am. It’s your go-to for lift status updates, weather, temps and wind up top. If it’s looking brisk, pack those extra layers.
Get up here early
Roll in before the rush, get a close park up the hill (or the best seats on the Methven Ski Bus) and sort the gear at your own pace, stress-free.

Getting Here
Just 90 minutes from Christchurch and 35 from Methven, we’re close enough for an ideal family day trip. Just make sure to check the Snow Report before you head up, it's good to know what the weather’s doing before loading up the car.
Don’t feel like driving? The Methven Ski Bus is a solid option. Just book ahead and give yourself a bit of extra time if you’ve got rentals or lessons to sort. Please note - these are not operated by Mt Hutt or NZSki
Coming from Christchurch? We’ve teamed up with Snowman Shuttles to run a $30 return service from Christchurch and Rolleston. You'll be up here by 9am, no stress.
Bringing your own wheels? Free parking’s up the hill. Keep an eye out for Carpool Priority Days, it will be on the snow report 48 hours in advance. On these days, guests will need to have a full vehicle of passengers to access the top car park. On those busier days, or when carpool priority is on, we run free shuttles from the lower carparks (Rakaia Saddle and Zed Creek approx. 2km from the main base carpark.) This means no lugging gear uphill. Too easy.
Need the full rundown? Our Getting Here Guide has you sorted.

Gear Tips for Skiing with Kids
The difference between a legendary day and calling it by 10am? It’s all in the prep:
Do a trial run. Suiting up can feel like a mission for the little ones. A few practice rounds at home help make game day a breeze.
Sunblock on. Even when it’s cloudy.
Layer like a pro. Tuck those base and mid-layers in nicely.
Smooth socks. No bunching = no complaints.
Boots snug. Toes should just touch the end. No heel lift, no pressure points.
Pants go over boots. Yep, both layers, to keep the snow out.
Neck warmer up. No gaps.
Gloves that fit. Dry, warm hands make a world of difference. Top Tip - always good to have a second pair just in case they get wet/lost.
Goggles on the helmet. Snug, comfy, and ready to roll.
MyPass handy. Chuck it in a high jacket pocket for smooth lift access.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to upload a profile picture to everyone’s MyPass card
It’s required for lift access. You can easily add your own photo online through your account profile on our website. To add a photo to the kids' accounts, stop by Guest Services and we’ll help you out.
While you’re at it, add the whole whānau as Associates to your account.
Adding someone as an Associate links their profile to yours. It means you can manage things like lift passes for them, view and compare mountain stats, and help out if they ever need assistance on the hill.
If someone gets separated or needs help, having them as an Associate makes it easier for us to get in touch quickly and keep everyone safe.
It’s especially handy for families; one login, one payment, all sorted.
Set Your Snow Day Game Plan
Here’s how to keep the day running smooth:
Pick a meeting spot
Choose an easy one – out on the deck or inside the base building. Handy if you’re splitting up for lessons or someone needs a timeout.
Breaks are your best mate
Tired legs can sneak up on you. Make sure you take breaks when you need it - grab a hot choc, loosen the boots, refuel at Ōpuke Kai or Sixteen 10 cafes, then head back out when everyone's recharged.
Keep it flexible
Kids’ energy can change with the weather. Be ready to pivot - whether that’s an early lunch or swapping one last run for a snowball fight.

Our Family Ski Day Checklist has your back.
